High Performance Single Crystal Composite Development
By maintaining optimal resonator dimensions and minimizing clamping effects, near ideal electro-mechanical coupling can be achieved in composites. While our efforts in composites are development in nature, we are investigating manufacturing 1-3 and 2-2 composites from less than 100 kHz to greater than 20 kHz.
Single crystal composites may benefit many applications, including SONAR, medical ultrasound, and non-destructive testing.
Advantages of single crystal composites include:
- 50% increase in coupling over bulk plates yields bandwidths up to 3 octaves
- Significant cost savings in system electronics as transducers perform multiple functions
